Field Trip: Autodesk Pier9.

Project Description

UC Berkeley students on tour! This time, we went to Autodesk and their Pier9 Workshop. With a group of students from the classes Arch259 – Flexible Hybrid Structures and Studio One 2017/18, we visited this amazing facility, which is all about design and fabrication and investigates how we will build in the future. At their workshop on the San Francisco Bay, a community of creative designers, engineers, artists, and product innovators explores new ways of making things, using state-of-the-art production tools and machinery. The 12,000 square-foot workshop is equipped with advanced 3D printing production tools as well as traditional machinery, with shops for CNC machining, wood- and metal-working, and more.

Thanks to a fantastic tour by the Pier’s new Ambassador Alyra Melchert and a super inspirational lecture by Autodesk’s Principle Research Scientist Andreas Bastian, our students had the chance to learn about the latest developments in additive manufacturing, metal printing, and digital fabrication. Thank you Alyra and Andreas!!
